Some people find themselves catching every cold bug that comes around or having allergies to many things. They then become prone to a serious condition known as nasal spray addiction. This is much more common that most people realize.
Nasal sprays are marketed on TV and in magazines as a resource for relieving nasal congestion. Consumers are lead to believe that nasal sprays are better than oral medications. In some instances, that is true. However, nasal sprays should be used sparingly. Excessive use can lead to a nasal spray addiction.
This type of addiction is different than other types of common addictions. The goal of the user isn’t to get high or feel intoxicated. They use the nasal spray to have some relieve and to breath easier. Those who develop a nasal spray addiction don’t realize how dependent they are on the product. The often do not read the label indicating the spray should only be used a set amount of times per day.
Due to over use of the nasal spray, your body becomes dependent on it. They brain reads that the mucus membranes in the nose feel relief with the use of the spray. Therefore, your body stops providing relief on its own. The user of the spray finds they have to use the spray more and more to experience any relief from the nasal congestion.
Ending a nasal spray addiction can be difficult. It takes determination. To start, throw out the spray. This will be difficult as you have come to rely on the spray. You can try to replace the spray with a simple saline solution. This is very safe and effective. You won’t develop an addiction to saline solution. Water is also recommended for nasal congestion. Drinking more water each day will also help you hydrate the dry tissues in your nose. It may take several weeks before you begin to feel better after you stop using the nasal spray.
