Unfortunately, however, even people who are familiar with periodontal disease often make the problem worse when they try to prevent it. This is because most people rely on mouthwash to combat the harmful bacteria in their mouths. But, if the mouthwash is made with alcohol or some other chemical agent, it can cause dry mouth. While it may kill one big batch of bacteria when used, it is actually making the problem worse. For the rest of the day, the mouth has no natural defense against the bacteria.
